SABI SAND

When the Kruger National Park was proclaimed in the 1920’s, the areas bordering the Park were retained as private hunting farms. In 1948, several owners of these private farms agreed to create one large 65 000 hectare conservancy, called the Sabi Sand Wildtuin with its eastern boundary being that of the Kruger National Park. Hunting was forbidden and the area earmarked for conservation of indigenous fauna and flora. In 1993 fences between the Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park were taken down and the private reserve now forms part of the two million hectare greater Kruger National Park wildlife sanctuary. Individual owners run one of the most successful Big 5 safari reserves in Africa, all working together to maintain a balance between conservation and tourism. Conservation pioneers MalaMala, Sabi Sabi and Londolozi are amongst the lodges that have made the Sabi Sand a world class destination.

The estate is a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg on national roads; three hours along the N4 toll road will take you to Maputo, Mozambique and an hour’s drive away is the Timbavati / Klaserie / Hoedspruit area, world renowned for its game viewing and conservation.
